Essential Skill Building:
Reading, Writing, and Comprehension Growth for 3rd Graders

ACAP Advantage Bootcamp

Tailored to help 3rd graders meet key academic benchmarks to advance to 4th grade.

Third grade is a pivotal year – the year the Alabama Literacy Act asks every student to show a strong foundation in reading before advancing to 4th grade. Parents feel the weight of that milestone, and rightly so. The ACAP Advantage Bootcamp is Better Than Average Tutoring’s answer: a targeted, skill-based workshop series built directly around what the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) measures, so students walk into testing season prepared, not anxious.

This isn’t generic test prep. Each bootcamp session targets a specific skill outlined in the Alabama Literacy Act – phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension – and is led by trained BTA instructors as a focused supplement to classroom instruction.

Why the ACAP Advantage Bootcamp Matters

Third grade is a pivotal year, and the ACAP Advantage Bootcamp is built around exactly what’s assessed. Starting in February 2027, these Saturday sessions cover phonics, phonological awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary, and deep comprehension – the full range of literacy skills the ACAP measures.

In a small-group setting of 10 students or fewer, your child builds familiarity with ACAP-style questions and leaves each session more confident than they arrived – the foundation for success well beyond this one assessment.

Workshop Structure and Duration

Each workshop is 2.5 hours long. We offer a morning session (9:00 AM – 11:30 AM) and an afternoon session (12:00 PM – 2:30 PM). Our instructors utilize direct instruction and hands-on practice to ensure mastery.

Starting Dates and Location: The ACAP Advantage Bootcamp kicks off the week of February 20th, 2027. Workshops are held every Saturday at our Montgomery, AL location.

Workshop Options and Pricing

Single Workshop Details

Parents may register their child for a single ACAP workshop session, which includes a workshop seat and a nutritious snack. New clients also receive a complimentary diagnostic assessment to identify their child’s individual learning needs, regardless of which option they choose.

4-Workshop and 8-Workshop Bundles

For families seeking a more comprehensive learning experience, we offer a 4-Workshop Bundle and an 8-Workshop Bundle (Full Bootcamp Experience). Bundles support continuous learning and deeper mastery of literacy skills, offering the lowest cost per session and the most consistent progress across ACAP-aligned skill areas.

Workshop Curriculum

ACAP Advantage: Phonics & Fluency

This session builds the foundation every strong reader needs: decoding and encoding skills tied directly to ACAP standards.

Students learn to break down multisyllabic words, recognize high-frequency words automatically, and work through sound-symbol relationships with precision – the groundwork for true reading fluency.

ACAP Advantage: Phonological & Phonemic Awareness

Strong readers hear language before they read it. This session strengthens a student’s ability to manipulate sounds within words – deleting, substituting, and reversing them – and introduces phoneme-chaining to build auditory discrimination.

These are the listening skills behind confident, accurate reading.

ACAP Advantage: Vocabulary - Language Layers

Vocabulary is the bridge between decoding and comprehension. This session focuses on academic and content-specific vocabulary – connecting new words to known ones, exploring shades of meaning, and introducing figurative language.

Students leave with sharper word relationships and stronger communication skills.

ACAP Advantage: Vocabulary - Contextual Connections

This session breaks words into their parts – roots, prefixes, and suffixes – so students can determine the meaning of unfamiliar terms on their own.

Students also learn how inflected endings change tense, number, and degree, building the confidence to navigate complex academic language.

ACAP Advantage: Comprehension A (Literary: Main Idea & Summary)

This session focuses on understanding literary text at its core: identifying the main idea – stated or implied – and the supporting details that build it.

Students also learn how cohesive devices like pronouns and conjunctions connect ideas across a passage, developing the skills to summarize with clarity and confidence.

ACAP Advantage: Comprehension B (Literary: Story Elements & Theme)

This session explores the elements that shape a story: setting, plot, and character. Students analyze how a character’s behavior, emotion, and traits drive the narrative.

By comparing themes and plots across texts, students sharpen critical thinking and build a deeper understanding of how stories convey meaning.

ACAP Advantage: Comprehension C (Informational: Text Features & Evidence)

Informational text asks something different of a reader. This session teaches students to navigate headings, subheadings, and graphics to locate information quickly, and to recognize text structures like compare/contrast and cause/effect.

Students build the skill of using textual evidence to support their understanding.

ACAP Advantage: Comprehension D (Arguments, Facts & Poetry)

This session challenges students to read critically: distinguishing fact from opinion using evidence and prior knowledge.

Students also connect their own experience to the stories, poems, and plays they encounter, and learn how authors use devices like metaphor and simile to convey meaning with intention.
